DeBabelizer will read Photo CD Image files. It will not read Photo CD Overview files.
In order for DeBabelizer to recognize them as Photo CD files, their Finder File Type must be set to "PCDI". If the files won't open, use the File:Open command and select the file in question. Click the Type/Cr… button to see the Finder File Type and change it to PCDI if it is not already.
The Open Options for Photo CD dialog determines the size and color of each Photo CD image read in. This dialog may be produced by selecting the menu command Misc:Preferences:Readers:Photo CD, or by selecting the File:Open command and attempting to open a Photo CD image. If the dialog's Skip box has been checked previously, this latter method will not work unless the Option key is held down while the attempt is made to open the image.
Each Photo CD image may be read in at one of five sizes and with either a grayscale or RGB color environment.
The image sizes and the memory required to open each is as follows (and are displayed in the dialog box):
Dimensions Gray Memory RGB Memory
192x128 25K 100K
384x256 100K 400K
768x512 400K 1600K
1536x1024 1600K 6400K
3072x2048 6400K 25600K
6144x4096 25600K 102400K
NOTE: if the image has been stored sideways, then twice as much memory will be required to rotate it into the correct orientation once it has been opened.
To determine how the image is read in, select the appropriate size from the Resolution popup menu and the Color Mode from the Color Mode popup menu in the Open Options for Photo CD dialog.
Select the appropriate radio button to determine how much of the image is read in:
-- If "Entire image" is chosen, the entire image will be read in.
-- If "Section" is chosen, then the rectangular bounds of the selection desired should be entered; hit the "Set to full" button to start out with the settings for the entire image.
-- If "Stashed Selection" is chosen, then the stashed selection marque rectangle values will be used to extract that section of the image. Note that the stashed selection marquee must be set to a valid rectangle; if it is not, the entire image will be read in. The stashed selection values can be set by double-clicking on the Marquee Tool, or by invoking the Stash Selection Marquee menu command in the Script Edit dialog box.
The "Rotate image into upright position if necessary" checkbox may be used to rotate the image into the upright orientation automatically after it is read in. However, note that the rotation requires twice as much memory as is required just to open the image. If there is not sufficient memory to do the rotate, the image will appear sideways.
To avoid seeing the Open Options dialog every time a Photo CD image file is selected in the Open dialog, check the Skip box. Then, when the Open Options need changing, simply hold down the Option key when selecting a Photo CD image file, and the Open Options dialog will appear.
